Shanghai Church

Yup, it's about time I got to church...haha! I was "church-less" for like...2 weeks? Haha...My dad linked me up with his friend that used to work in China, Uncle Yew Keong and he linked me up with his son, Wayne, who linked me up with Denise, who linked me up with her mum, Jeh Ling, an expatriate in Shanghai. Haha!

Yes...almost NO LINK...LOL. After much arrangement and deliberation, we finally made it to our very first cell group! :D HAHA!

The amazing thing about attending cell group and services is...WE ARE ALL CHAUFFEURED!! HAHA! All our adult church mates have their very own chauffeur!

I guess the expatriate life ain't that bad after all! HAHA! They'll send their chauffeur to pick us up FROM OUR PLACE and drive us to cell group and church...and back home :D LOL.

That is their house basement, fully equipped with projector, laptop, guitar and piano. All ready for an acoustic worship session. Haha.

The uncle sitting on the chair is the host...if I didn't get it wrong...HAHA! They are all Singapore and Malaysian expats working here in Shanghai.

Uncle Coleman and Aunty Jeh Ling are Singaporean expats. They're the ones who really took care of us...Driving us around, treating us lunch, talking and making us feel comfortable.

Coleman gave us his number and told us "If you need any kind of help. Just call me. I will help you" in the affirmative, fatherly kinda tone. I felt so assured and felt like I found myself a Shanghai-Singaporean daddy. HAHAHA!

After a short praise and worship session, we headed up to hear a sermon CD sharing by Ps Benny Ho. After the sermon CD is over, they all took turns to share how it spoke to them.

I am amazed at their openness and spiritual insights. For adults to be that open is quite rare I guess. But when we meet in the name of Jesus, how can we not open our hearts? :)

After they all shared how the sermon spoke to them, we headed to another room upstairs to pray. We shared our prayer requests and prayed for each other :D

And of course, REFRESHMENTS! Singapore-style! What's a meeting without FOOD? HAHA! Below's a picture of us fellowshipping over food :)

The thing about their house is...IT'S SUPERRRR BIGGGGGGG! It's like some bungalow/palace! Ok...the house has 3 floors.

You may think "3 floors nia...". The thing is, one floor is SUPER BIG!! 1 floor itself can fit 5-6 bedrooms! Ok, their first floor has a huge living room and a BIGGG KITCHEN.

The basement is as shown in the above 2 pictures, is where our cell group is held. The basement has a DANCE STUDIO!!! It also has a huge unfurnished area where you can fit 4-6 table tennis tables...That's a good place for kids to play soccer or something actually...HAHA!

The second floor has like 6 bedrooms? We didn't walk the whole floor but when we looked down the corridor, we know that there are at least 4 bedrooms, if not more. We went up there to pray for each other.

And their house entrance is...WOW. Here's a picture of it...it's like an entrance to some bungalow or resort. haha!

We conversed readily with them in our colloquial Singapore English accent and they were like asking us what are we doing here, working as what, paid how much, etc...

PAID HOW MUCH.

When we told them we were only paid a pathetic 1500RMB/month, they were like "WHOA, how you survive?"

Coleman, an executive in Exxon Mobil, told us "Why not you intern at my company? We pay our interns quite well, some more you're from Singapore. We pay at least 4000RMB to our interns"

My heart was torn to pieces...WHY DIDN'T I KNOW HIM EARLIER?! WHY NTU CHOOSE SUCH LOW-PAYING COMPANIES?! HAHAHA!

Another guy who was also chatting with us jokingly commented "My maid is paid more than you guys. We pay her about...4000RMB/month. You want you can work for us lor...still got the Shanghai experience." HAHAHA!

I would've accepted his offer to work as his house maid if not for my bond with NTU. HAHAHA! LOL LOL!

Ok, enough ranting. What's done is done. Where I'm supposed to be is where God has intended for me to be. Haha.

From our first meeting, we learnt that this lil' expat cell group was formed EVEN BEFORE the church was formed!

Because of that, some of them attend Thanksgiving English Fellowship (TEF), some of them attended Abundant Grace Church.

In spite of the different churches they attended, they'll still faithfully meet up every Friday for cell group. So yeah, the cell group is really the main thing for them which is cool.

Yup, we attended TEF on Sunday with Coleman and Jeh Ling. Their Sunday service is at 8am -__-" BACKSIDE TEARINGLY EARLY. KTHXBYE. HAHAHA!

But the good thing is, Coleman sent his chauffeur to drive us from our house to the church :D HAHA! Hallelujah! haha

Coleman was on duty. He was the sound man for that day and thus he had to go there EVEN EARLIER...Like 7am? Wow.

TEF - Thanksgiving English Fellowship

As the name implies, the whole service is conducted in English. The pastor who shared the sermon is an ang-moh and he speaks pretty well and uses a lot of Bible verses in his sermon.

The service was good...very formal and somewhat reserved. Super different from Heart of God church where service is super lively, where everyone's responsive and alive, where the music and worship is pumping.

Here, when we sat down, we will just shyly smile at the person beside us and greet him "morning" and for the rest of service, would be found only listening and whispering the lyrics of the worship songs softly.

Really different culture...I guess we're too used to the hyped up atmosphere and the responsiveness & excitement of the congregation in Heart of God church.

Yup, after the respectful and somewhat solemn service was over, we decided to take photo in the auditorium :D

Can you see the guy clad in a blazer in the background? That westerner is the guy who preached. Haha. Not bad an orator...but his style was more of explanatory teaching than passionate preaching. Still good though :)

The awesome thing about this church? They have a reception room which SERVES FOOD!! :D :D HAHAHA!

They serve cakes, cookies and coffee :) Below is a picture of the refreshment table...the lady was kinda taken aback by my camera I guess...HAHA!

After that, Coleman treated us to brunch at some semi-fast-food chain at I don't know where. HAHA! We really don't know where we are because we were entirely chauffeured to and fro. Haha!

Over brunch, we got to talk to Coleman & Jeh Ling's kids - Denise and her brother (I forgot his name...kthxbye..haha!)

They were both educated in an American school in Shanghai. So they speak American English. Their accents are a giveaway. Haha.

Learnt a lot about their schools. Their schools have inter-school games with only the International Schools. So they only get to mix with international students and not the locals.

Most of their classmates in their American school are Koreans. So it's like a mini American-Korean environment in their schools.

Yup...after the first visit, I haven't went back in 2 weeks because we've been travelling...haha! So yeah, we'll probably visit another church the next time round.

Maybe Abundant Grace church or we'll visit our fellow NTU friend, Wei Jiat's church :) Yupyup, thank God for awesome brothers & sisters in Christ :)

家有好面 + Carrefour

One thing about China is...Carrefour is littered ALL OVER this country! haha! There's one "nearby" our place...only 3km from 花木路地铁站 haha!

The thing is, we DIDN'T KNOW THAT. And our house is about 1.5km away from 花木路地铁站...haha!  We thought Carrefour is super near 花木路地铁站.

So, being totally unaware of the distance we're gonna travel, the 5 of us decided to WALK THERE FROM OUR HOUSE!! LOL LOL!

After asking for directions and walking for A LOT in the ULTRA COLD WEATHER, we finally reached our destination...AFTER ONE HOUR OF WALKING. KTHXBYE. HAHAHA!

I was actually feeling so cold that I decided to run there...LOL! I ran until I ended up perspiring...LOL! Anyway, upon reaching the area near Carrefour, guess what we saw???

I was totally surprised. I thought Ananas was just some common, no-big-deal food chain started at Singapore MRTs and trying to become a booming business. Little did I know, they had franchises in China!! Wowsss. LOL!

Anyway, we didn't attack Carrefour immediately. After walking for about 4.5km, we were famished! So after much searching, we finally decided to eat at this restaurant called 家有好面.

We apprehensively walked in...and we had TOTALLY NO REGRETSSSS!!

Their noodles were good...not excellent though...and the prices were good. Haha. Ok, here's what we ordered.

Zhi Sheng's 麻辣牛肉面 was REALLY SPICY. I took a mouth of his soup and my tongue was crying out for water alr...LOL! But I think it was SHIOK...Like totally.

Chor Seng's noodles were kinda sucky...cos it tasted like Maggie Mee with mushrooms. Haha! His soup was really like all MSG...but the noodles were still good though. Haha.

By far, I think our choice is the best! :) HAHA! The tomato soup noodles were FANTASTIC! The soup base was nice. Not too sour with tomato taste and not too sweet or salty.

The hum or cockles were an interesting blend to the tomato soup base. Yup, we really enjoyed our bowl of tomato noodles :D

Ok, here comes the BEST PART. The best part is THEIR DESSERTSSSSSSSS!!! :D hahaha. Like totally. We actually ordered it because it was cheap...but after one serving, we made several more servings! LOL!

Their Crème brûlée was AWESOME. The molten layer of sugar on top of the custard-egg base was nicely done. But this wasn't the best dessert though....

The best dessert award goes to their NUT SORBET!! :D It's not really sorbet though...more like some ice-cream thingy...but oh well, that's what their menu said. Haha

It costs only 5元!!! Initially we only ordered one to share amongst us. But after each of us took a scoop of that heavenly delight, sharing was no longer in our dictionary. HAHAHAHAHA!

We ended up ordering 3 more if I remember correctly. HAHA! It costs only like SGD$1!!! OMGOSH CHEAPPP and SOOO GOOODDDDD...haha!

And we ordered another dessert soup but I totally forgot what's it called...The other 2 desserts totally stole the limelight. HAHA! Yup, summary of the desserts we ordered...

Yup, after our hearty meal, we headed over to Carrefour to do some shopping :D Surprisingly, the stuff there is REALLY CHEAP.

The next funny one is...we saw a SUPER BIG TEDDY BEAR!! :) It was really cute but when we turned it around we realized...BACKSIDE TEAR!!! LOL LOL!

Yup, we bought the standard household stuff we needed and all and yup...that's the end of our short journey to Carrefour with my awesome housemates! :D

It's time for healing, time to move on

This post is dedicated to a really close friend of mine that I dearly love and have many scuffles with. But with each scuffle, I'm glad we could put together a conclusion that makes us grow and learn and move on.

I guess God put us together in each other's lives for a reason :) You've taught me many things as much as I've taught you many. I'm dearly blessed by our friendship :D

It was a usual day at work in Shanghai's Venture-GES and I was assembling small parts together to be mounted on the machine.

If I wasn't talking to anyone (which is rare...LOL!), I'd either be singing, thinking or praying. This time, I was thinking...thinking a lot about this dear friend of mine.

I knew I had to convert my thinking energy to prayer energy. Wow...Physics...Energy conversion like kinetic to sound energy and all...LOL!!

I was praying and God dropped this song called "Whatever You're Doing" by Sanctus Real. I was singing this song as I continued my work and DID NOT REALIZE that it was a word for you!

When I realized that song was for you, a lil' message from heaven came with it. Let's start with the song first.

My first reaction to this message in a bottle from God was "My friend ain't no Christian, how is this gonna be applicable?"

This is the reply I got.

To us Christians, this song just reminds us that whatever that happens in our lives, no matter how bad, how terrible, how ugly any occurrence may be, we know that God is doing something, inside of us...

Yes it totally FEELS LIKE CHAOS...but somehow there's peace. The peace comes from our Christian understanding that above all, God is and always will be in control so long we walk according to His will (Romans 8:28)

To the non-Christian, EVERYTHING that you go through ARE ALSO GOD'S WAY OF MOULDING YOU.

C.S. Lewis said before, "Pain is God's megaphone to rouse a deaf world."

God uses the painful affairs of life to wake people up to realize that we are not created for this world.

We feel heartbreak and we long for it to disappear, we dream of a PERFECT WORLD, we dream of PERFECT RELATIONSHIPS...we dream of perfect love from a dream guy/girl that will hold us and love us for ALL WE ARE.

WHY? Why do we CRAVE PERFECTION???

It's because we were created for another world, a perfect world.

BUT THE PROBLEM IS, when non-Christians go through problems, since they don't believe that God is control and all...they react differently.

They become bitter. THEY HATE, become terrorists, become abusers. Or they CLOSE UP, become introverted, become cynical of everything and everyone and some even commit suicide.

Few non-Christians rise up through these trials and become a stronger person. Those non-Christians that make it somehow have the right principles in life that saw them through. Those principles should be pretty similar to those found in Christianity.

Ok, CONCLUSION:

1) BOTH Christians and non-Christians both suffer and go through tough times and really shitty, screwed up times in life.

The thing is, how do we respond? Where do we draw our strength from? We can draw our strength from people. But people are flawed and they will hurt you.

And people will one day die. So when the people whom you draw strength from is gone, who next?

2) This song is thus applicable to both groups - Christian and non-Christian alike...we all go through stuff like that.

BUT, the time now is for...HEALING.

IT'S TIME TO MOVE ON. It's the first few lines of the song.

The pre-chorus states "There's a wave that's crashing over me, all I can do...Is surrender"

Who will you surrender to today? Your friends? Your family? Your loved ones? Or to the one big guy that the song is talking about?

Yeah, that's the lil' message I felt impressed in my spirit.

Do give the song a listen again...over and over and let the words sink in.

上海歌城 + Supper

It’s yet another lazy Saturday morning and we had nothing planned for the day except going singing with the rest at night.

I think I woke up at 12pm or 1pm…as usual…HAHA! After having a lil’ leftover breakfast that Jamie & Zhi Sheng cooked, I went on to read my Bible J

Chor Seng already left to meet Xuan Qi and the rest (as usual..HAHA!) while we nua-ed at home. Haha!

The moment I finished my quiet time was the moment Zhi Sheng suggested “Let’s go gym!” Haha! God’s timing is indeed perfect. LOL!

So off we were to the gym to do some workout :D

If you’re wondering where did we gym at…you’re gonna get a really expensive answer…LOL!

Beside our “condo” or apartment is a really atas hotel called Dorsett Shanghai :D I think it’s a 3 or 4 star hotel. Inside it is a really ATAS gym. HAHA!

The gym is pretty small… Four to five people’s a crowd already in this small gym…But it’s still atas because it’s very clean, well taken care of and their facilities are well-maintained. I know it’s like DUH it’s a hotel…but, in China, you rarely see such well-kept facilities. Haha.

The most awesome thing about the gym is its toilet. The toilet has a SAUNA! LOL! It also has a towel rack by which we can freely take from and it has shower facilities.

The next thing you should be wondering is…how did we get in? HAHA! The thing is, WE JUST WALK IN LIKE A BOSS! LOL!

Of course we dressed down…not with our winter down coats, scarf, ski cap, gloves and all. We simply donned a jacket, track pants and sports shoes and WALK IN LIKEABOSS! LOL!

The gym is unmanned! There’s actually a counter there but no one’s there! Haha! Their staffs are probably slacking and eating snakes…HAHA!

Oh, over here, they call it “打酱油” which, in our Singapore terms means “jiak zhua” or “eat snake”…HAHA!

Yup, there we were, illegally gym-ing #likeaboss. HAHA! LOL! The gym has only 2 treadmills, 2 cycling machines and one weight machine for lats pulldown and stuff. The rest were benches and dumbbells.

Gym-ing halfway, I over-exerted myself and let out a manly “AHHH!” which activated their 打酱油 staff over! LOL!

She walked in looked at us and walked out. LOL! I think she thought we were guests because when she walked in we were SPEAKING ENGLISH :D LOL!

If we were to be conversing in mandarin, she might think we were some locals who sneaked in. HAHA!

The best part is, after we’re done gym-ing, we also walked out LIKE-A-BOSS by the main entrance. We even greeted the staff at the counter as one of them opened the main door for us. HAHAHA!

Yup, that was a really interesting #Likeaboss experience. TOTALLY. HAHAHA! We’re gonna do that for the next 6 months man. HAHA!

After the gym session, our tummies were rumbling and we called 外卖as usual :D We ordered some KFC family feast. HAHA!

The chicken was good BUT I think they shortchanged us 2 pieces of chicken! We were like…”Eh, why like so little ah?” LOL! -.-“

We didn’t bother to pursue the matter because it was just way too troublesome and the price was not worth our efforts. Haha.

Yup, we then got changed and got ready to meet the rest to SING K!! YAY! :D HAHA! Gareth came over to our place to meet us.

OH, talking about Gareth coming over…this was how the war began! LOL LOL LOL!! Actually, they signaled war in the afternoon already.

I don’t think I shall blog about this in detail unless I have the time to. In a nutshell, all of us (11 in total) were planning to go on a CNY trip together.

However, the trip planners only planned the trip for 8 people and didn’t inform the rest (which they will ferociously deny). I figured the planners did that because they didn’t want such a big group but didn’t know how to tell the others not to tag along.

The 11 of us make up 3 different houses. Basically, one of my housemates abandoned us (according to him, he was blinded by a fit of rage) to go on a trip with another house which had a pretty girl whom he has continually showed favour towards for an extended period of time. HAHAHA!

This he will also viciously deny but thus far, his actions have spoken otherwise and many friends have voiced their displeasure in his 重色情友 ways. So yeah, this is how it began…on a lazy Saturday afternoon. LOL.

OK, back to the less-tensional part of the story…HAHA! We were going to SING K!! WHHHEEEEEEEE! :D So Zhi Sheng, Soon Hwee, Gareth and myself hopped onto a cab and headed there.

The cab driver dropped us at the wrong outlet -.-“ Haha! There are like several 上海歌城 in that area -_-“ It was around 人民广场/陆家嘴 area.

Thankfully, the outlet that everyone was at already was just a 10 minute walk away. Whew…LOL! If not, we’d be pretty pissed.

We walked in to a rather reserved atmosphere I felt and I was all ready to lighten it up :D HAHA! After the four of us arrived, I got us to do a lil’ introduction because there was a new face…Gareth was like “How come got stranger one?” LOL LOL!

The new face was Chloe, a Singaporean 上海nese who is also an NTU student on exchange! Haha. Yup, shall let the pictures take over from here :D

Oh by the way, the girl in the photo above pictured with me is Chloe, the hybrid Singaporean-Shanghainese. Haha! She seems unimpressed with my vocal competency. LOL LOL!

I must say the group of us here can REALLY SING. The 2 best singers in the house were Soon Hwee and Yu Fen!!

None of us expected Soon Hwee to sing that well. LOL! Because his normal talking voice/tone was kinda like normal? It didn’t have a unique tone to it. Haha.

But when he took the mike, it was a whole different story! LOL! He imitates the original singer’s voice VERY WELL. His voice really turned heads. Haha!

The next one is Yu Fen. Her voice is also *WOW*. Her rendition of the chinese songs are also really similar to the artist’s one. She also know how to harmonize. Level up. LOL!

When I heard her voice I was really wow-ed by it and I was like “Is it sung for me one or not?” LOL LOL!

Soon Hwee & Yu Fen did a few duets together. It was simply amazing…用中文来形容是叫天衣无缝! Haha! It was really seamless perfection.

Because they kept duet-ing, we started stirring :D HAHAHAHA! Soon Hwee found his singing mate! So happy for him! LOL LOL!

For me, I covered almost all the English songs. HAHA! Oh, and my rendition of “童话” won Soon Hwee’s appraisal. HAHA! He was like “哇,唱得充满感情” HAHA!

Anyway, I’ve already been singing in church for service since like…secondary 4? So, no count. Haha! LOL!

And oh, Jamie bought us all egg tarts! J Jamie’s always the caring mother who never fails to provide and care for us :D Haha! Really glad to have her as a housemate. Haha!

The most memorable part? I just started singing the song “Hero” by Enrique Iglesias when Shu Min teased me “Hero! Such a nice song! BUT, sung by Jonavan ah?!” HAHA!

I was singing the verse at that time “Would you dance, if I asked you dance…” and when I heard what she said, this was my melodic reply…*play the tune of the verse to the lyrics*

“Shu Min, Can you please shut your mouth.” HAHAHA! I couldn’t continue either because of the laughter. Yi Ting, seated beside me was like “Whoa, you just owned her la…now she very sad already.”

HAHA! After that, she really became much more quiet and everyone kept blaming me. -_-“ HAHA! But she’s fine la…After that I asked her if she’s fine and…of course she is! Haha!

Shu Min’s a really spontaneous, fun-loving person if you don’t know her. She’s the one that kept our K-boxing alive by adding comments to the music’s MV. HAHAHA!

She also sings very well. I think this group of us are really good singers…like totally. Because when I go sing with friends, usually only half of them are vocally competent…but for this group of untrained non-musicians (if my assumption is not wrong), it’s really impressive. Haha!

After our 3hour++ session of belting out many English and Chinese songs, we decided to…NOT GO HOME…but eat SUPPER! HAHA!

It was my crazy idea actually but the rest kinda liked my idea too. HAHA! So off we were in 3 cabs to our supper place…

This place is always offering 打七折. HAHA! In china, they don’t go buy 30% discount or 50% off kinda thing. They go by percentage of original price paid.

So in this case, 打七折 means you only pay 70% of the total price. This means, 30% discount in Singapore’s way of advertising. Haha!

Yup, this restaurant is like always on 70% discount. We walked past this restaurant like 1 week ago and the staff were also going “打七折啊! 打七折” LOL.

This restaurant pricing wasn’t too expensive…if you compare with Singapore’s restaurant…HAHA!

The most exx porridge is 168RMB!

One BIG, fat pot of crab porridge costs only 168RMB! That’s around SGD$34! Ok, it’s expensive, but it fed TEN people…Ok, nine, since Shu Min didn’t eat. HAHA!

We bought 2 BIG POTS and the 10 of us couldn’t finish it! LOL! Basically we paid around SGD$7.50 per person for premium seafood porridge. Haha. No kidding. It was good.

The only setback for this restaurant are its teacups…The teacups are PUNY!! Fill it to the brim and it can only fill like a fifth of your mouth! -_-“ Haha! No kidding.

I was this close to drinking directly from the pot man…HAHA! I had to like drink 5 teacups to at least feel that my thirst is sort of quenched. Haha!

Next up is…the wintry walk back…HAHA! Since we were like walking back in the middle of the night at like 2am, the road was COMPLETELY EMPTY.

So I actually posed for Jamie’s camera in the middle of 4 road intersections…HAHAHA! #likeaboss LOL!

However, the pictures turned out to be #likeaBLUR -.- HAHAHA! Nevertheless, my effort of posing has been expended…so I shall show you the blur shots. HAHA!

In photography, such an effect is called the "bokeh" effect...if I didn't remember wrongly. haha! So yeah, Jamie zai photographer ok? LOL!
