CNY countdown at the Bund

Yup, the day after our 花木路 style steamboat, we headed to 外滩 for our Chinese New Year countdown! :D

We heard that there's a countdown to CNY at the Bund that's filled with massive fireworks and all...so off we were to the Bund :D

Chor Seng, Xuan Qi, Jiamin & I  on the train to the Bund :D
Take 2...in case the reflection-photo wasn't clear enough...haha!
We were off to meet the SuZhou gang - Yan Ling, Daniel, Sheng Jie and Zhong Da together with Shumin who's their tour guide. HAHA!

Yup, we met up and had lotsa small chats and all as we walked toward the Bund. The next few pictures will look VERY FAMILIAR..haha! The same background, but this time, with different faces :D

Xuan Qi, Me, Chor Seng, Shu Min & Jiamin at the Lover's Wall :D
Take 2 without the light shining in our faces...haha
Me with the awesome Bund backdrop :D
Me with the SuZhou guys :D From left: Da Zhong, ME, Sheng Jie and Daniel Ling :D
Me, Xuan Qi & Jiamin with the awesome night view of the Bund :D
Yan Ling, Shumin & I with some bull statue...HAHA!
After much walking, talking and laughing, we found out that the fireworks only start at 12am!!! Kthxbye...that meant we still had like 1hour+ to kill! So...meanwhile, we just walked around trying to find a place to eat.

We went to a nearby hotel near the Bund...If I didn't remember wrongly, it's Fairmont Peace Hotel...We actually wanted to eat there but realized our wallets couldn't handle the atas-ness...so in the end, we only went there to utilize its toilet. HAHAHA!

The toilet was SOOO NICEEEE that I had to do a self-portrait in there! LOL! I know...Only girls do such stuff...but the toilet was just sooo niceeee...LOL!

Me in the super nice toilet in Fairmont Peace Hotel :D
We then decided to have a lil' supper at McDonald's...haha. Not much shops were open by then sadly...if not I would never have eaten at Mac. HAHA!

As we walked along 南京东路 we randomly just ate some street food like my satay in the picture below :D

Me with my Satay...and with Sheng Jie on my left and Yan Ling + Shumin on my right :D
Ohh and in the photo above, that's the last picture of Shumin you'll see for this post. HAHA! Because after this, she went back home! :(

She wasn't feeling well luh...so we let her off. HAHAHA! Less Shu Min = less a lot of laughter and jokes and all... :( Haha...BUT, I'm still there! LOL LOL LOL! :D

When we arrived at McDonald's we realized we weren't the only smartie pants who had this idea of supper-ing till 12am to catch the fireworks -.-" haha

We then waited around until we finally got seats...but our seats were scattered...and I think Xuan Qi & I are the only 2 nuggets that took photo of each other in Mac...hahaha! And yes, we shared a pack of chicken nuggets. LOL.

Me :D
Xuan Qi :D
We're just too cam-whore already...go everywhere also must take photo. Haha! I guess this is one awesome thing we have in common in the sea of many differences that we have. Haha!

Nearing midnight, we went back to the Bund and guess what? EVERYONE was packing the circumference of the Bund...the area by the river.

Thankfully, we managed to find a spot for ourselves and we quickly squeezed in and even managed to squeeze out a group shot :D HAHA!

All of us!
The beautiful skyline of 陆家嘴 from the Bund
Now here's the best part, at 12am, everyone was expecting MASSIVE, MOUTH-OPENING, SKY-ILLUMINATING fireworks to shoot out around the Oriental Pearl Tower area...but none of that happened -.-"

Fireworks just began firing from all over the place...Behind us, in front of us and EVERYWHERE ELSE EXCEPT the main part of the skyline in the picture above -.-

Here's a shot of the skyline with fireworks toward the right of the photo...Y U NO PUT FIREWORKS AT THE MAIN AREA?!!?!

Take 2 :D

We were really disappointed...the closest firework display was the building behind us. It set off fireworks for a continuous FIFTEEN MINUTES!!

I think that'd cost a bomb...LITERALLY. HAHA! To release fireworks for a whole 15minutes would mean thousands of dollars spent (in SGD) haha.

Shanghai failed us all! :( HAHAHA! Ok, maybe we should've lowered our expectations. HAHA! We were kinda like expecting a light-show and massive firework display around the Pearl Tower kinda thing? Haha.

Anyway, to compensate for our disappointment, we all decided to light our sparklers at the same time!! HAHA!

Almost immediately, a voluntary constable (policeman) came up to us and tell us to put out the sparklers! LOL!

Xuan Qi actually video-ed down the whole spectacle but it's stuck somewhere in Chor Seng's computer...so...lemme try to pen it to life. haha...

When the policeman told us to stop, Yan Ling was like "灭不了!" And the policeman, in his awesome show of ignorance, retorted "把它吹掉啊!"

Yan Ling, overflowing with contempt and sarcasm, actually went to do what the policeman instructed and she was like "吹不掉! 吹不掉!" LOL LOL!

Well, at least we all had that few minutes of fun with the sparklers...haha! We still had another pack of it actually...But, we didn't want to tear our backsides over such a small thing. Haha.

Next, we lit our 孔明灯! :D For those who don't know what's that, it's a lantern that will fly up to the sky when lit. Haha.

The practice is to write your wishes on the lantern and then light it up and let your dreams and wishes fly up high to the sky :) Symbolic eh? So cool..haha

Yan Ling's wish and her expressed love for ODAC and her respective OGs :D
Since there were like 8 of us, we bought 2 kong ming lanterns :D 5 of them wrote on one, while we wrote on another :D haha. Here's several shots of us with our 孔明灯! :)

Yan Ling, Me & Xuan Qi with our Kong Ming Lantern :D
After QC-ing the shot, Xuan Qi was like "EH, we never hold the 孔明灯 properly..." haha! So here goes take 2...

Take 2 :)
This time, the backdrop wasn't centralized...HAHA! And yes, that's considered proper holding of the 孔明灯. LOL! So here goes take 3...

Take 3 :)
Compare take 4 to take 3 and you'll know why take 4 meets all the requirements. HAHAHAHA! I'm also pretty OCD about my pictures too actually...HAHA!

Finally satisfied :) Haha!
After we were done taking photos, a GANG of INDIANS came up to us and wished us "Happy New Year" and wanted to take photos with us!!!

ULTRA RANDOMNESS!! But we were like "Ok...why not? Since it's Chinese New Year right?" Haha!

The thing about those ah-nehs is that, they kept wanting to take picture with Yan Ling and Xuan Qi!! HAHAHA! Jiamin was already hiding away. LOL!

They were really touchy and they'll just squeeze with you in the picture...so as much as Yan Ling & Xuan Qi were scared, we were also afraid for them. HAHAHA!

You can obviously tell who's tryna squeeze with us...haha
1 little 2 little 3 little Indians....HAHAHA!
In the photo above Xuan Qi was like...in an anxious whisper tone "Jonavan! I very scared!" and grabbed my arm. HAHAHA! Granted la...There like 6-10 of them behind you...really dammm scary. Later backside tear. HAHA!

Nervous shot 2....HAHA!
Last shot of our ordeal...HAHA!
Throughout all this squeezing and shuffling...Those ah-nehs TORE MY 孔明灯!! HAHAHA! I really think so. LOL!

There's another video of me SADLY throwing away the 孔明灯 that's videoed by Xuan Qi and stuck in Chor Seng's computer. Haha

I shall upload them soon...and if I never do...here's what happened - I simply dramatized the throwing away of the 孔明灯 in a Filipino accent. HAHAHA! KTHXBYE. LOL!

So...ours had to be thrown away :( And the 3 of us re-wrote our wishes on the other 孔明灯. And it came as no surprise that it is illegal to light up 孔明灯s too.

BUT, WE DID IT ANYWAY. HAHA!

We watched as the 孔明灯 rose up into the semi-hazy night sky in 上海外滩 :) It's kinda heartwarming seeing your written hopes rise to the sky in such a fashion.

Somehow, our hearts are created to hope, to dream to imagine, to desire, to want to do something meaningful in life.

I guess that serene moment of watching our dreams on the 孔明灯 contrasting the vast night sky sort of captures this feeling.

We watched until our 孔明灯 slowly become smaller and smaller and I'd like to imagine it as - It became a star in the sky. Haha.

OK, actual fact: It probably crash landed on someone's roof and that guy must be like "WHOA PIANG OEI! NEED TO CLEAR ANOTHER LANTERN -.-" HAHAHA!

Yup, that ended our little CNY adventure at the Bund :)

It's around 2am when we decided to go home...There were taxis ALL OVER and most of them were charging EXORBITANT PRICES.

We flagged a few cabs and they all offered really rubbish prices. Our trip back only costs around 30元. Some of them charged 50元 and some 60-70元.

I even dialed a cab but the company couldn't find any available cab to send down to fetch us -.- So how? We waited until 2 honest taxi drivers came and fetched us :)

I was the man to bring the ladies home :D HAHA! Me, Jiamin, Xuan Qi and Yan Ling took 1 cab :D And yes, Yan Ling's staying over at Shu Min's place.

Our cab driver was honest because he turned on the fare meter...BUT, HE DROVE SUPER SLOWWWWW.

In the end, the fare amounted to be around 35元 if I remember correctly...haha. Now here's the best part.

We sent Yan Ling back and when we called Shumin, she was ALREADY FAST ASLEEP and thus not able to open the door for us -.-

Thank God for Tingyi who is call-able at night. HAHA! We ringed her and she opened the lobby door and main door for us.

Whew...the grand finale is...when Yan Ling went back, SHU MIN LOCKED HER BEDROOM DOOR AS WELL. HAHAHA!

Now you know who not to find to host you when you come to Shanghai...HAHAHA! Yup, it was a memorable day indeed :)

CNY reunion steamboat - 花木路style :D

This is gonna be a longgg post...So rub your eyes and wake your brain...Haha! Our CNY celebration was TOTALLY AWESOMEEEEE POSSSUMMMMSSSSS! :)

But, behind every awesome get together is a team of hardworking and dedicated people...which is...ALL OF US!! HAHA!

Jamie & Zon took charge of the planning and delegated who buy what, bring what, etc...For us, as hosts...we wanted to be OUTSTANDING hosts...Guess how we did it? :D

Me, Soon Hwee & Zhi Sheng trying out our HOST UNIFORM :D
YEAH. We saw this at the shopping mall and it was like 40元 for one...so...WHY NOT? This corny CNY outfit is sure to up the 春节气氛! LOL!

Here's one pose by me that's sure to up the CNY atmosphere...HAHA! :D

Ready to spar...LOL!
As we were shopping, Xuan Qi, Li Seng and Jiamin also joined us at Century Mart to buy their meat stuff for the coming get-together.

And yes, our outfits are meant to be SECRET...so we were like burying our outfits inside our shopping trolley so that the 3 of them wouldn't see it. HAHAHA!

OHH one more LOL story! I was calling someone on my phone when my phone suddenly jumped out of my hand!! HAHA! I also didn't know how or why I suddenly flinged my phone...I think it was my hand natural hand movement that went out of control.

When my phone left my hand, Xuan Qi and Jia Min's face was like "HOLY SHITTTT"..HAHA! SO WAS MINE. LOL!

Here's the epic part...My phone flew at like Xuan Qi's face and my instant reaction was to save it so I simply grabbed it off her!! HAHAHA!

And the thing is...I CAUGHT IT!!! HAHAHAHA! Jia Min was totally ROFL while Xuan Qi & I were like laughing uncontrollably. HAHAHA!

Ok, if you didn't witness it, it's hard to know how EPIC the whole 10 second moment was. LOL LOL LOL!

Because they were only 3 persons, I went over to join them in their shopping and to help them carry their stuff at the counter...

Meanwhile, my housemates were already done with their shopping...and they went out first...Little did I know their sneaky little plan.

Jamie then came running in with her camera and asked me to go out like they wanna take a group photo together like that...

When I went out...THEY ALL ATTACKED ME WITH SNOWBALLS!!! ARGGGHHHHH!!! I was really taken by surprise...HAHA!

Innocent me fending myself :(
In defensive position while holding their shopping stuff...
Me melee-ing Zhi Sheng...HAHA!
These are the pictures of my evil adversaries...one of them is not pictured probably because he's too ugly or something...HAHAHA! JUST KIDDIN' :D :D LOL!

Evil fat Chor Seng
Dark Zhi Sheng
Sinister Jamie
I successfully fended off their snowball attacks like any formidable hero would even while holding my damsel's belongings...HAHAHA!

I then went back in to help them carry the rest of the stuff...I knew when I come out, they will launch another evil attack! LOL!

So this time...I came out with Xuan Qi and USED HER AS MY SHIELD!! HAHAHAHA! That's what friends are for right?? LOL LOL!

Anyway, of course I didn't let my damsel get hit...LOL LOL! Round 2 of snowball fight began and of course, good always prevailed and thus I'm still typing this post. HAHAHAHA!

Yeah, costumes settled. Food settled by Xuan Qi, Li Seng & Jiamin. Drinks settled by Kah Wei, Zon, Yong Qiang and Gareth. We're READY :D Haha!

After a good night's rest, I once again woke up to a nice breakfast - custard buns! :D Haha..It's actually some egg bun or something...but it tasted like custard bun...haha.

Custard buns for breakfast! :)
After breakfast, we started to ready our house for the influx of 20++ guests later...the next few pictures are like checklists...haha

Snacks and drinks? Check! :D
Firecrackers and Fireworks? Check! :D
Dessert? Check! :D

One bowl of dessert for me? Check! :D LOL!
Soon Hwee slacking? Check! HAHAHAHA!
I must interject at this juncture...HAHA! Soon Hwee sat there playing DOTA 2 all the way...even until the guests arrived!

Our guests had to even tell Soon Hwee to stop playing!! WOW. Jamie was pretty pissed with him actually but didn't want bad blood...not auspicious la...HAHA!

This happens all the time...like after they cook dinner and after we're all done eating and his food is left there cold...he'll still be on his computer DOTA-ing. Haha!

We likened him to be like a secondary school kid. And Jamie's like the mum calling him to eat. HAHAHA! True story bro.

I kinda identify with that cos I was like that too last time. HAHA! But now, I stopped playing computer games already...Maybe once in a while. Now I'm stuck with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Blogging. HAHA!

And yes...here comes our first few guests! :D

Gareth, Charis, Zon, Julia & myself playing cards :D
Take 2 :D
While the 6 of us were playing asshole ti-tee, Soon Hwee was still DOTA-ing...HAHA! But asshole ti-tee was really fun...because I kept WINNING! :D :D HAHAHA!

Jon & Zon's photobomb successful! :D HAHAHA!
Waiting for the rest of the guests to arrive...
Yes, we were ALL WAITING for the rest of our guests to arrive. The meeting time was 7.30pm...and Shu Min, Ting Yi, Serene, Kah Soon and Yu Fen strolled in at 8.30pm!!

Not only was the steamboat boiling, but our blood was boiling too! LOL LOL! Just kiddin' :D HAHA! Yi Xiang was getting hungrier and hungrier which means...angrier and angrier. HAHA!

He was poised with his chopsticks all ready to strike...and he posed in our 花木路 whatsapp group "Where you all? Don't make me angry ah" HAHA!

But, what to do? Wait lor. While waiting...here are some of the stuff we did other than playing asshole ti-tee...HAHA!

Take random photos! :D LOL!
Li Seng preparing the meat :D
Eric and a few others helping to set up the steamboat pots and laying out the food :D :D Ohhh...just look at the spread :D

Getting ready to whack...ahaha
ALL WAITING IMPATIENTLY...HAHA!
The picture above is really EPIC...I think that was when Yi Xiang got pissed enough to send that whatsapp message out. HAHA!

Everyone was impatiently waiting with sweaty palms...sweaty from controlling our muscles to prevent our hands from attacking the food. HAHAHA!

Yup, finally, the VIPs came and WE GOT STARTED! :D :D Like, FINALLY...whew. LOL!

Ohh, regarding our costumes...as you can see in the previous few pictures...we didn't wear our corny CNY outfit YET...that's because we got a awesome plan :D

All of us had a favourite CNY song by Andy Lau called "恭喜你发财". WHY? Because, in every supermarket, THEY WERE SPAMMING THIS SONG!! HAHAHA!

Be it century mart or Carrefour, this song was spammed all the way, making our shopping experience a horrific one...HAHAHA!

We all heard it until it's in our bloodstream already...so yeah...And we PURPOSELY didn't play this song at our get together...BECAUSE WE'RE SAVING IT FOR OUR GRAND ENTRY.

The plan is...mid-way while everyone was eating, the 5 of us hosts will go in our rooms to change into that outfit.

Once we're changed, we'll get someone to play the song LOUD LOUD and we'll all BURST OUT of the rooms with our costumes and sing along with Andy Lau!! HAHAHA!

COOL RIGHT?? LOL!! So yup, Shu Min was our VIP that's in charge of playing the song...The thing about her is...our arrangement was when I signalled her...She will play the songs about 5minutes after the signal.

So I signalled her and we all went in to change...and guess what? SHE DIDN'T PLAY THE SONG. KTHXBYE.

After waiting for like 10mins in the room in our disastrous outfits (LOL), I called her "Eh, play the song leh -.-" HAHAHA! And she was like "OHH, OK OK!" KTHXBYE. HAHA!

So yup, when she finally played the song, we all came out and sang along with it and wished everyone 新年快乐 :D

In actual fact, I was the first one out...The rest were all waiting for me to go out and SING LOUD LOUD then they will also come out...HAHAHA! So...I'm the second cue...LOL.

恭喜你发财 song played on my laptop and HDMI-ed to our TV :D
After randomly wishing everyone and talking rubbish, it's time for our fantabulous CNY-ish host shot :)

Event hosts unite! :D HAHA!
Take 2! :D
Yup, it was a successful performance by the hosts! :D HAHA! After that, we all went round taking photos randomly in our AWESOMELY RED and AUSPICIOUS outifits :D Here's my share...haha

Li Seng & I :D

Here's another fantastic poser pose...HAHAHA! Zhi Sheng acting one 赌神 with 4 aces in his hand...HAHA! But got feel la...LOL

Take 2 with 1 girl...LOL!
All of us! :D At sofa area :D
All of us :D At dining area :) haha
After all the makan-ing...remember, we still had FIRECRACKERS & FIREWORKS!! :D :D Haha...So off we were to Century Park (世纪公园) to set it all off :D

A snowy 世纪公园! :)
Upon reaching there we first set up the FIRECRACKERS! :D It's was basically a long red string of explosives with a REALLY SHORT FUSE. HAHA!

The moment Eric lit it, it exploded and Eric's ear drums probably suffered some hearing loss...HAHA! Anyhow, below is a photo of me posing with the firecrackers IN PUSH UP POSITION :D LOL! #random

Me in push up position above the firecrackers! :D
You can watch the video of the firecrackers in the facebook video below later in the post...Haha...Next up is the MAIN THING - FIREWORKS! :D

Fireworks in position ready!!
The total cost of the fireworks and firecrackers is MORE EXX  THAN THE FOOD. LOL! I think the cost of the pyrotechnics amounted up to around 700元...bought by Yi Xiang, Wei Jiat and gang from Century Mart. Haha.

But I think it was worth it...watch the video of the fireworks later and you'll know why. Haha! Here are few shots of this nightsky-illuminating pyrotechnic display.

ARTI ARTI ARTI!!! LOL!
Happy Chinese New Year!! :)
Charis, Li Seng, Jiamin, Xuan Qi & I :)
Take 2 :D
ODAC POSE!! :D
ODAC POSE AGAIN :D
Yes, Soon Hwee is considered ODAC-er since he joined FOOT 2010 but didn't stay in the CCA. Haha. For the 2 penguins in the background - Charis & Ting Yi. Act 一个 ODAC. LOL!

The next shot is epic. It's the 5 housemates! :D 4 of us are saluting our household colonel, COL Jamie Lee. LOL!

Chor Seng, Zhi Sheng, Soon Hwee & myself saluting COL Jamie! :D LOL!
Take 2 :D
Me & Wei Jiat with a dismembered snowman! LOL LOL!
All of us! :D
Take 2 :)
The Venture peeps - Yong Qiang, Kah Wei, Chor Seng, Me & Gareth :D Kian Yong on the extreme right...is a photo-bomber..HAHA!
After spamming photos at by the bridge...some of them went to the road to take jump shots! Since the roads are like totally vehicle-less at 2am, why not? haha

While they scattered to the roads to take their road-shots, the few of us decided to take photo at the 世纪公园 sign :D
ME! :)
Take 2 :D
Take 3 :)
And the last and most awesome shot done by 4 avid ODAC-ers, me, Chor Seng, Shu Min & Yan Ling :D

ODAC pose!! :) :D
After that is our turn to do the street-shots...HAHA! So yeah...we did a lot of failed jump shots...so only those that can make it is here...LOL

Me, Chor Seng, Jamie, Zhi Sheng & Soon Hwee with a semi-failed jump shot...haha!
Since our jump shot failed, we decided to do a stand shot. LOL!
All of us! :D
Me & Yan Ling! :) All the way from Suzhou! :D
Yes, Yan Ling came to join us in Shanghai with 3 of her friends during this CNY :D Glad to know she's doing well :)

Zhi Sheng & I :)
Last BIG group shot :D
Last group shot before we went back :D
And yes, see the picture above? It's one of the entrance to our unit's compound :D It's actually a condominium...it's fenced up with security guard posts at every entrance.

BUT, there's usually no guard there and people just walk in and out freely. -.-" But people can enter the blocks because the entrance is controlled by tap-card. So...that's where the real security lies.

Yupyup, that was more or less our whole CNY experience :) I'm glad we made it this fun :D Yes, it fell short of my expectations...I regretted not leading group games and stuff to warm everyone up with laughter.

But oh well, it was still awesome...it could've been worse right? Haha...Yeah, HAPPY CNY 2013! :D

Here's a video of the whole 花木路 CNY experience! :) Video credits to my awesome bff Xuan Qi :D Hahaha. Yup, first hand account of what happened :D

Let us teleport to the next day!! I woke up and saw how Chor Seng dressed up the angry bird in our house...haha

Angry bird with my ski cap and gloves...LOL
Just after we finished steamboat yesterday, we got started with ANOTHER ONE!! HAHAHA! The thing is...I think our cosy, 5-people steamboat was MUCH BETTER :D

Cooked the leftovers :)
Yes, those are the leftovers! One of the blessings of being the host :D Haha! Yes we gotta wash up and clean up...but, we also get to enjoy another round of steamboat ourselves! :D

Chor Seng & I steamboating :D
The curry soup was FANTABULOUSLY AWESOMEEE POSSUMMMM :D hahaha! We thoroughly enjoyed this round of steamboat amongst ourselves indeed :D

Zhi Sheng & Zi Sheng enjoying the food :D HAHAHA!
BEST SAUSAGES IN TOWN!!
Pictured above is the MOST JUICY, CRUNCHY SAUSAGES WE'VE EVER SAVOURED!! My mouth is watering now...HAHAHA!

When our teeth sank into its crunchy body, the juice within oozed out and filled our mouth with wholesome sweet-salty meat flavour :D

Curry noodles!! :D
Yup, we had fantastic curry noodles too! I'm seriously getting hungry now as I describe the food..HAHA! I shall go get myself something to eat. LOL!

So, yeah. That was Chinese New Year for us! :D 新年快乐2013! :) May the snakessss be with you! HAHAHA!

And yes, I'm born in the year of the snake :D #randomfact Haha. HAPPY CNY! :)
