After booking out on Friday night, I rushed to our very first leader's meeting with our very new youth pastor - Ps. Daniel Teo :D
I must say, I do like Ps Daniel's candour and his mild ah-bengish flair. Haha. And he's pretty friendly and easy-going person :) He talks the way I'd talk and we see the same few things that are needed to change in the youth.
First and foremost, the mission and vision of youth alive. Phrased so professionally and linguistically impressive that people don't get what the heck those 2 statements are there for and thus, these statements have just become redundant sentences of denial that we know but don't really believe or live out or even work on it.
Ps Daniel simply asked "What's our Youth Alive mission statement?" and it silenced our leaders. Not just anyone in the youth but our LEADERS. Shows alot eh? Leaders don't know liao, members how? Die lor. And that's the condition of our church for the past few years.
2nd thing he was quite upset about was our time taken to move from our seats to the front during our worship sessions. ME TOO. I always tell my closer leader friends that the time taken for our youth to step forward shows very much our expectations to meet with God.
3rdly, he said something like "If there's anything wrong in the church, it's always the leaders' fault." That's true. But that's not what many of our leaders believe. Some of 'em push blames, give statements or expressions like "So?" etc...
Ok, I shall stop revealing all my blatant observations for the past few years...But the thing is, I feel GLAD that FINALLY someone up there in the leadership post has identified the problems frankly and hopefully is going to do something about it. Cos I've tried doing it for the past 19 years of my life and found that bottom-up approach can never be more effective than top-down approach.
What we need is a culture change. For the culture to change we need to know the truth about Christianity and the heaviness of our responsibility as little Christs. We need to recognise that we can live victoriously! Ok, I myself am not but am working toward that...toward that BIG word called REVIVAL. I'm still learning & praying & breeding my faith...
So yup, jia you Ps Daniel! I'll keep you in prayer :) Hope to work together soon :D
